Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. On September 12, 2024, the Fourth Global Youth Zero Carbon Future Summit, jointly hosted by the Global Alliance for Climate Change (GAUC) and the UNESCO East Asia Regional Office, was held at Tsinghua University. During the summit, Miranda Schreurs, a professor of Environment and Environmental Policy at the Technical University of Munich, pointed out that global climate change has profoundly affected human life, especially vulnerable groups in developing countries, including impoverished communities. She calls for cooperation from all sectors, utilizing the innovation and research capabilities of universities, to promote the establishment of effective climate policies and technologies. Shahbaz Khan, representative and director of the UNESCO East Asia Office, praised the passion and sense of responsibility demonstrated by young people in addressing climate change in his speech, and expressed appreciation for their innovative contributions in the field of sustainable development. He emphasized that addressing climate change requires science and innovative solutions, and education, culture, and technology are key forces driving the green transformation of society. It is crucial to cultivate the next generation of leaders who can tackle the challenges of climate change during this transformation process. Xia Zehan also introduced the global initiative of the United Nations' International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development (2024-2033). This initiative is committed to harnessing the power of science to drive the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He expressed his expectation for strengthening cooperation with Tsinghua University in climate change science education in the future, in order to help young people around the world actively participate in climate action through technological innovation activities. Li Zheng, Dean of the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development at Tsinghua University and Secretary General of the Alliance, pointed out in his speech that in the face of climate challenges, young people, as future leaders, bear an important mission. He stated, "Through GAUC's Youth Climate Collaboration Program and Global Youth Climate Week, hundreds of young people have received training and support, initiating over 300 climate actions worldwide. This not only highlights the importance of youth in climate governance, but also provides them with opportunities for practice and innovation." Li Zheng introduced Tsinghua University's contributions to climate action and breakthrough progress in zero carbon technology, hoping to use the summit as an opportunity, action oriented, to inspire their communities to promote lifestyle change and jointly promote climate action.
Chinese climate change envoy Liu Zhenmin emphasized the important role of youth in climate change action in his speech. Liu Zhenmin pointed out that the urgency and complexity of global climate governance should be recognized, and called on the international community to establish closer partnerships and work together to achieve the goals set by the Paris Agreement. He stated that China will continue to make efforts in the development of new energy, improving energy efficiency, and increasing carbon sinks. Youth are not only the inheritors of the future, but also the architects driving carbon neutrality. He encourages young people to continue playing an active role in global climate governance, starting from participating in summits, contributing to the promotion of global climate action, and demonstrating their commitment to global sustainable development through practice.
The youth organizers of the summit come from multiple universities in different countries, fully reflecting the action concept of "youth organizations speak up for youth". The three-day summit is divided into four theme challenges: "Clothing, Food, Housing, and Transportation" and a creative short video call for "My Zero Carbon Dairy". It encourages young people to influence businesses and social organizations through action, participate in the practice of climate change and sustainability, cultivate outstanding climate talents, enhance the motivation, sense of mission, and leadership of young people, and showcase their youth responsibility to global climate leaders, policy makers from various countries, and society concerned about climate governance.
